A national disgrace for India

West Bengal is a state in India having about 100 million people, about 71% of whom are Hindus, and about 27% Muslims. Christians in the state are a tiny minority of about 658,000 i.e. 0.7 % of the total population. They are a peace loving people, and do not harm anyone, rather they provide some of the best educational schools in the state, where the students are of all communities.

However, ever since the Hindu oriented BJP ( Bhartiya Janata Party ) has come to power in May 2026, increasing attacks on Christian by right wing groups, allegedly allied to the BJP, have been witnessed.

A recent such incident happened on Sunday, 5th July 2026 when a mob vandalised an under-construction church in the Buri Bot Tola in the Subhasgram area of West Bengal’s Sonarpur, just south of the capital of the state, Kolkata, where a small community of about 50 Christian families of the Presbyterian Church reside.

As per reports in the media, the vandals broke down the church’s door, damaged two newly erected pillars and destroyed three crosses installed atop the building after climbing onto its tin roof. The mob allegedly also threatened the congregation.

Nearly 100 people gathered near the church around 3 pm on July 5, alleging that the Christian community there was carrying out religious conversions. Barnali Bhiyan, a community member said that painting work was underway when the crowd stormed in.

Another local resident Utpal Ghosh claimed that after breaking the church’s door, the mob used a ladder to climb onto the roof and vandalise the crosses.

The allegation of the Hindu attackers was that these Christians are trying to convert Hindus to Christianity

The truth, however, is that the assailants are bigots, goons, and extortionists

Recently at least 5 incidents of anti-Christian violence took place in West Bengal.

 (1) A mob attacked the home of a Christian widow in Murshidabad, demanding she abandon her faith and donate her property for conversion into a Hindu temple.

(2) Hindu activists seized Bibles and briefly detained Christian worshippers at a Protestant prayer meeting in Bankura.

(3) Attackers broke windows, desecrated the altar, and damaged musical instruments at a Mizo Synod Presbyterian church in Subhasgram.

(4) A mob attacked Grace Church at Faridpur during a Sunday service, assaulting the pastor and members of the congregation

(5) In Raniganj, Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal, members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad, an organization allied to the BJP, disrupted a Christian prayer gathering, and harassed worshippers.

All such incidents are a disgrace to India. We are a country of great diversity, and so the only correct policy which can hold us together and take us on the path of progress is the policy of suleh-e-kul or giving equal respect to all religions and communities, proclaimed by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar

Those who attack Christians, or any community in India, divide our people, and so are our real enemies and anti-nationals
