Supreme Court Registry to Operate Every Saturday Starting July 14

Introduction and Brief Background

On June 14, 2025, the Supreme Court of India issued a Gazette Notification relating to its legal notice amending the provisions of Order-II in the Supreme Court Rules, 2013. The amendments shall come into effect on July 14, 2025 and have been issued under Article145 of the Constitution with the backing of the President. All changes to the former Rules 1 to 3 in Order-II are substantial and have fundamentally updated the Court’s and the Registry’s working hours on a daily basis, updated rules 1 to 3 in order to clarify Saturday, and also provide the Chief Justice the authority to change partial working days.

Constitutional and Statutory Authorisation

The amendment is based on and made on the authority of Article 145 of the Constitution which provides the Supreme Court powers to frame rules for regulating its practice and procedure. The Gazette Notification G.S.R.385 (E) asserts the use of Article 145 and all enabling statutory powers to substitute Rules 1 – 3 of Order-II in the Supreme Court Rules, 2013. Deferring the Court’s rule-making power to smooth the facility and provide for the registry’s use for modern requirements. The new Rule 1 provides the following revised normal working hours:

New Rule 1 provides that the Court and Registry will be operating from 10 A.M to 5 P.M. on a daily basis except Saturdays and holidays and partial working days.
