A huge criminal enterprise in Gurugram was only stimulated by the need to find a fast solution to weight reduction. Authorities have completely dismantled a racket producing and selling counterfeit Mounjaro KwikPen injections. The medication was initially used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes but has gained worldwide fame as a weight loss drug. In a planned raid, the authorities seized a huge supply of such counterfeit injections. The drugs that have been confiscated are estimated to be priced at ₹70 lakh in the market
Two people were arrested by the police. The police have charged them with a number of provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Mounjaro is a very costly drug produced by Eli Lilly. One legitimate injection is as much as 28000 rupees. The need by desperate patients seeking cheaper options presented a profitable market to these counterfeiters. The whole exercise has now created a nationwide health alert.
Intercepting the Delivery
The bust began with a certain piece of intelligence information. Informers reported to the local drug control department that there was a huge illegal consignment that was passing through the city. A joint team of drug inspectors and Gurugram police officers set up a trap. They stopped a Swift Dzire at around 7:25 in the evening around Super Mart-1 in DLF Phase 4
Outwardly the car was perfectly ordinary. But indoors, the police discovered cartons of ice boxes. These boxes contained dozens of Mounjaro injections with doses of 2.5 mg to 15mg. The chauffeur said he was simply driving a hired taxi on a local delivery. The passenger was a man of Uttar Pradesh who has been detained by the police as he is called Mujammil Khan. Khan was a deliveryman with the syndicate. In his first interrogation, he turned in his boss. He informed the police that all the stock was owned by a man called Avi Sharma. The police instantly called Sharma, a Sohna resident, to the scene.
When Sharma arrived, the authorities asked him for a valid drug distribution licence. He had not a thing in the world to display. He was unable to generate any documents that would enable him to stock, sell, or transport pharmaceutical products. Both men were immediately arrested by the police.
The Sector 62 Production Centre.
The search was not limited to the car. The police had to discover the actual source of these drugs. The trail led them straight to a residential society in Sector 62. The gang attacked a flat which was the nerve centre of the complete criminal syndicate
It was chilling what they discovered in the apartment. The accused were smuggling not drugs alone. They were even preparing them manually. The suspects, according to health department officials, imported raw pharmaceutical chemicals that were directly imported to China. They used these untested raw materials and then blended them with water to make the counterfeit medicine.
The flat was a mini factory. The team retrieved special packaging machines in the premises. The whole production line was under the control of the suspects in that one apartment. They combined the liquid, poured the vials, printed the counterfeit labels, and affixed the counterfeited barcodes to the boxes. It was a fully operational end-to-end production facility that was under wraps within a normal house.
Red Flagging.
It is not always easy to identify a fake drug. These criminals even went to the extent of replicating the actual appearance of a genuine Eli Lilly Mounjaro package. However, there were some key mistakes that they committed.
When the boxes seized by the drug inspectors were inspected near Super Mart-1, there were instant discrepancies. The spot memo noted that the font size of the recovered cartons was different with that of the original product. It also had some slight differences in the details of labeling that tipped the counterfeiters off.
The other large flagellum was the temperature. Authentic Mounjaro is a biological drug which is very sensitive. It should be kept at all times between 2-8 degrees Celsius. When the cold chain is broken, the drug is ruined and thus useless. The ₹70 lakh consignment was being carried by the smugglers in simple ice boxes. The temperature in the boxes was not up to the strict medical requirements needed of such a medicine. Having biologically degraded injections or fake injections, which are not biologically degraded, has serious and unpredictable side effects that can be harmful to health, medical experts caution.
The Web-based Supply Chain.
It was not in the dark alleys that the syndicate only sold these drugs. They operated a contemporary, electronic business. Drug Control Officer Amandeep Chauhan stated that the accused used the popular business-to-business portal IndiaMART to find buyers. They capitalized on the thriving demand by the wealthy customers in high-end localities such as Galleria Market.
A broader supply chain is also under investigation by investigators. The initial billing records and the information of the interrogation indicate that the counterfeit drugs were channeled through Delhi. The consignment is highly suspected by authorities to have passed through Bhagirath Palace that is among the biggest wholesale pharmaceutical markets in the country. The police are in the process of tracking down all the pharmacies and distributors who may have bought stock of this particular gang. The idea is to determine the precise number of individuals who have been already injected with this toxic counterfeit formula.
The Legal Crackdown
The government is considering this a serious health epidemic. A formal case was filed in the Gurugram Police in serious penal sections. They referred to Section 17B of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 that specifically addresses spurious drugs. They also used Section 27(a) and 27(c) of the same act, as well as heavy charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
