I have often said that only a people’s revolution ( jan kranti ), after a long drawn people’s struggle ( jan sangharsh ), led by patriotic modern minded leaders, can solve the huge socio-economic problems India is facing—massive and widespread poverty and unemployment, appalling level of child malnutrition ( every second child in india is malnourished according to Global Hunger Index ), skyrocketing prices of food and other essential commodities, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc.

It is only after such a revolution that a political and social order can be created under which there is rapid industrialization and steady rise in the standard of living of the people

Many people have asked me how long will it take for this revolution to come ? After all, 78 years have passed since Independence in 1947, but we are still bedevilled with the above curses. When will it come ?
In reply I often refer to a passage in Charles Dickens’ famous novel ‘A Tale of Two Cities’. At an early part of the novel, there is a conversation between Defarge, a wine seller, and his wife Madame Defarge, both of whom are secretly revolutionaries.
Defarge is despondent and dispirited because he thinks that the revolution for which he has been working for many years may not occur in his lifetime. To which Madame Defarge replies: “What of that? It will come.”
Defarge asks, “But when will it come? How much time does lightning take to strike the ground ?”
“How much time does it take to build that lightning,” asks Madame Defarge in response. “An earthquake strikes suddenly, causing massive death and destruction. But how much time does it take to build that earthquake ? You may not see the end. But you have contributed to it. Let that be your consolation, and be satisfied by it.”
A true revolutionary is like Madame Defarge, who patiently continued with her knitting of names of tyrants who will later be guillotined when the revolution takes place.
No one can predict when and how the Indian revolution will take place, as one cannot be rigid about historical forms. A revolution is usually a very complex protracted historical process, in which tremendous sacrifices have to be made by patriots. The counter-revolutionary forces, both internal and external will put up fierce resistance to it. In particular, the developed countries will oppose it tooth and nail, for the reasons given below :

In fact India’s Long March has not even begun

But before an actual revolution can take place there is always a long period of ideological revolution, which is going in India, and in which the weapons used are not guns, bombs or swords, but ideas. Thus, before the great French Revolution of 1789 ( which destroyed feudalism in France ) there was a long ideological revolution led by great thinkers like Voltaire, Rousseau, and the French Encyclopedists.

India is presently going through its ideological revolution, but the actual revolution is still far off.
My own guess is that the India’s revolution will come in 15-20 years from now, though this is only a conjecture
