I have often said the national aim of India ( in which term I include Pakistan and Bangladesh, for we are really one nation only temporarily separated by a British swindle in 1947, but are sure to reunite one day under a secular government ) is to abolish the huge problems of our massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnourishment, skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc
I have said that this problem can only be solved by transforming India from a relatively backward country into a modern industrial giant, like China or USA.

Such transformation will be opposed tooth and nail by powerful external and internal forces, which want to keep India backward and semi-feudal. Hence a mighty united protracted people’s struggle is required led by patriotic, selfless, modern minded leaders culminating in a historical people’s revolution which sets up a political and social order under which there is rapid industrialization and steady rise in the standard of living of the people who get decent lives. So it is only a revolution which can solve our huge socio-economic problems.

I have also said that historical experience shows that before every actual revolution there is an ideological revolution led by modern minded thinkers and writers, whose weapons are not guns or bombs ( as are used in an actual revolution ) but ideas.
Thus the British Civil War and Revolutions of the 17th century were preceded by the writings of Desiderius Erasmus, Francis Bacon, John Locke etc and the Reformation in Europe by Luther, Calvin etc. which upset the dominant Catholic ideology and faith in many European countries, including England and began ‘The Age of Reason’ (see online). The French Revolution of 1789 was preceded by the theories and writings of Voltaire, Rousseau and the French Encyclopedists (Diderot, Holbach, Helvetius etc.). The American Revolution (1775-1781) was preceded by the writings of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and others. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was preceded by the writings of Herzen, Chernyshevsky, Plekhanov, Gorki and Lenin.

Without the ideological revolution there can be no actual revolution. Why does an actual revolution require a prior intellectual revolution ? The reason for this is that before a person fights for a cause he must know what he is fighting for, and must become convinced he is fighting for a noble cause. For that he must be educated and inspired by patriotic intellectuals, who explain to him the object of the struggle. Without this knowledge and conviction he will not fight, or fight only half heartedly.
In India we are passing through the period of ideological revolution, which is the precursor to our actual revolution ( which is still far off ). In this period the role of intellectuals is very important, for intellectuals are the eyes of society, and without them the people are blind.
But these must be genuine intellectuals, modest and seeking the truth, like a scientist, not the pseudo ‘intellectuals’ seen today pontificating and strutting around arrogantly like peacocks with their sterile, bookish, half baked ideas of what is good for the nation. For instance, there are many professors of economics in Delhi School of Economics, JNU, Delhi University etc. flaunting Ph.D. degrees from Harvard, Yale or the London School of Economics, but not one can tell how to solve the problem of massive unemployment in India.

The aim and objective of the genuine intellectuals is to patiently explain to the Indian people the causes of their present predicament, and the way out of it. This will not be an easy task, as there are powerful vested interests opposing it, as well as the force of habitual beliefs ( casteism, communalism and superstitions ) among the people, who are usually conservative by nature, and who do not want any change.
Those who wish to change the status quo will face fierce opposition from many quarters, and may even be physically attacked like Gauri Lankesh, Narendra Dabholkar, Prof Kalburgi, and Goving Pansare in India. In Europe, Voltaire and Rousseau had to fly for their lives from the wrath of the feudals whom they strongly attacked.

Intellectuals must give guidance to the Indian people as to how their problems can be solved, but how can they do this if their knowledge is itself superficial, bookish, half baked, and perfunctory ? It will be like the blind leading the blind.
So the first step in our ideological revolution will be to educate the ‘educated’ people of India, and that is what I have been seeking to do. Once these so called ‘educated’ people are really educated, they will then be in a position to give guidance to the nation
