Ajit Anjum
By Justice Katju
Many people like Ajit Anjum, Ravish Kumar, Arfa Khanum Sherwani, Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Kishor, etc as well as leaders and spokespersons of the Congress and other opposition parties, have been shouting and screaming for long about ‘vote chori’, that the Election Commission of India, by not being neutral but by being hand in glove with the ruling party, and particularly by issuing the SIR ( Special Intensive Revision ) order which has allegedly deprived 6-8 million citizens of their votes in Bihar, has murdered democracy in India.
But let me ask these self styled celebrities some questions

Ajit Anjum & Co. start with the assumption that democracy is a good thing ( and therefore harming it is bad ). But is this assumption correct ?. What it overlooks is that democracy is not an end itself, but can only be a means to an end. That end must be raising the standard of the people, and giving them better lives. If democracy helps in achieving that end, it is a good thing, but not otherwise.
Everyone knows that in India democracy runs largely on the basis of caste and communal vote banks. When most voters in India go to vote, they do not see the merit of the candidate, whether he is a good man or bad, educated or uneducated, criminal or not. They also do not take into consideration the rise in unemployment, rise in prices, etc. They only see the caste or religion of the candidate ( or the caste or religion which the candidate’s party claims to represent ).
Casteism and communalism are feudal forces ( saamanti shaktiyaan ) which have to be destroyed if India is to progress, but democracy further entrenches them and makes them stronger ( because it largely runs on their basis ). So how can it be a good thing ? Ajit Anjum & Co. never ask this crucial question
I must congratulate and thank the journalist Neelu Vyas who allowed me to raise these questions in her interview with me ( see above ).
I ask Ajit Anjum & Co. this question : even if the voters list is correctly prepared in Bihar, how will that have any effect on the lives of the people of Bihar ? Will that improve their lives ? Will that reduce poverty, unemployment, child malnutrituion, skyrocketing prices of food etc, lack of healthcare and good education for the masses ? At most it may result in change of leadership, Nitish Kumar being replaced by Tejaswi Yadav. But, as Manthara said to Kaikeyi in the Ramcharitmanas :
” Koi nrip hoye hamein ka haani
Cheri chhaand ka hoib rani ”
i.e.
” How does it matter to me who will be the king ( Ram or Bharat ) ?
I will remain a slave girl, not become a Queen ”
Democracy is said to be the best form of government, but, as the Greek philosopher Plato said in his book ‘Republic’, in fact it is the worst. It creates the illusion that the people are the rulers of the country, when the truth is it is being ruled by a handful of crooks. It creates the illusion that the people can choose their leaders, when the truth is the only choice the people have is to choose one among several thugs. Often they will choose the most charming performer, for in a democracy politics is really a theatre, and politicians are actors who promise to give to the people whatever they want ( promises never to be kept but ‘jumlas’, as Amit Shah said ).
Creating the illusion among the people that they are the rulers of the country, makes the people content, smug and complacent, for why and against whom will you revolt or rebel if you yourself are the rulers ? Will you rebel or revolt against yourself ? So this seductive nature of democracy, its power to create massive illusions which keep the people servile and in poverty and misery, without revolting against the real rulers, makes it the worst form of government, as Plato rightly said.
So I ask Ajit Anjum & Co. the question : are Indians fit for democracy, when the mindsets of 90% of them are full of the ‘gobar’ of casteism and communalism ? Should they be given the right to vote, when 90% of them will vote like sheep and cattle on the basis of caste and religion, ignoring the merits of the candidate ? So how does it matter whether the voters list is correct or not ? Is this not irrelevant ?
