NLSIU Bengaluru Students Protest Over Water Crisis and Hostel Overcrowding, Allege Administrative Apathy

Students of National Law School of India University in Bengaluru are in a rage. Lots of people were on the basketball court at a campus on late May 12, 2026. The assembly soon evolved into a large protest against the administration. Their lives are so bad, they are fed up.

But as the evening progressed, the crowd would not move away. Rather, they chanted slogans and demanded prompt responses from the top leadership. It’s been years that have been worked out in the background. Repeated complaints of campus life have been ignored, say students.

The protest went into overtime, to well after midnight without any resolution. Students brought out blankets and water bottles as they were getting ready for a long journey. It was a clear demonstration of agitation from the future lawyers of the country.

Taps Run Dry

The immediate cause of the protest was a great water shortage. Taps were found to be dry for hours at a stretch in the Women Hostel. This total blackout is preceded by a disturbing lack of water that had been ongoing for days. Life was paralysed on a daily basis.

This shocking situation was most severely experienced by female students. There was no running water so basic hygiene for menstruation was not maintained. The protesters emphasized that it is not an inconvenience for them, but a big one. It can be very harmful for your health, such as: Urinary Urge, Poor Sanitation.

Pupils are angry about having their body dignity breached. They are looking for a first-class institution that provides them with a safe and sanitary environment. Rather, they are the ones who are having trouble obtaining water for survival such as bathing and cleaning.

Stuffed Like Sardines

The water issue is but one component of a far greater issue. NLSIU has been actively expanding its student rolls in past few years with a new expansion plan. The number of seats in the BA LLB batch from 2021 has increased from a small 120 seats to approximately 310 seats.

The university implemented new academic programs also recently. A 120-seat per annum undergraduate LLB course was added.A three-year LLB course was added, bringing the total number of students to 120 per annum. For the academic year 2025-2026, the brand new B.A. Honours course added 60 more students.

The student population increased rapidly, but the infrastructure was not able to keep up. The administration began to push more people into existing residential blocks, since they had more bodies to accommodate. Double-occupancy rooms became triple-occupancy rooms.

These are small rooms in which bunk beds were quickly pushed in. When asked about the new living situation, students say it’s like matchboxes. At first, it was said that bunk beds were only for junior batches. This promise was short-lived as the policy spread to all years.

A Clear Divide

The overcrowding is not the same for everyone throughout the campus. Protestors noted a disturbing difference between the male and female facilities. It’s as though all the weight of the speedy growth of the university has landed on the shoulders of women students.

As per the reports, there are 93 bunk-bed rooms in the Women’s Hostel now. By contrast, these cramped set-ups are found only in 18 of the Men’s Hostel spaces. That equates to almost 60 percent of women residents living in these triple occupancy situations.

Only 10% of boys are in the same position. Female students say this obvious inequity is evidence of inequitable treatment by the university administration. They are pressing for a fair and balanced policy on the allocation of hostels in the future.

Falling Roofs and Concrete Slabs

There is a lot of space cramping here, but physical safety is even more of an issue right now. Students say that the new bunk beds are shoddy and unsafe. According to several reports these wooden and metal frames have literally come apart several times.

It appears that the campus is being constantly built and expanded, with the result that it is now in a state of decay. Some of the scare incidents referred to protesters were related to infrastructure collapsing close to their dorms. In recent years, granite slabs and chunks of older hostel roofs have reportedly caved in.

The big scare occurred on April 15th 2026, during the day. Large concrete slabs fell from the third level of the ongoing construction of the New Academic Block. The heavy materials rained down on a busy pathway that is used every day by students to reach their regular classroom.

There was no safety net or protective measure at the construction site the students were in. A few minutes later, if a group of students had been walking by the results may have been fatal. The administration is simply blaming the building contractors, according to the allegation.

The entrance fee is $9.The entrance fee is $9.

NLSIU consistently features in the top law schools of India according to all the national rankings. It’s extremely difficult to get in and it’s not cheap to study there. The cost of five years BA LLB course is approximately 4.5 lakh per year.

The newer three years LLB course costs even more, at around 5 lakh per year. Students are crying out loud about this gap in quality of facilities and the high fees.

If you have such a price to pay, you’re entitled to having the essential aspects of living provided without any questions asked. The protesters feel totally shortchanged by the system. They are paying huge amounts to provide an elite education, but sleeping in dangerous, substandard dorms.

Deaf Ears and Mental Health Cuts

The heart of the current irritation is utter indifference on the part of administrators. Students openly state that the university’s leadership has an extremely obstructionist attitude. Official grievances about serious living problems face a strong brick wall when they are raised.

The Registrar (Dr. Saurabh Bhattacharjee) made every effort to pacify the angry gathering on the night of the protests. The Director of Campus and Residential Life was also at the basketball court. They promised the students it will be given due consideration.

The pupils were adamant in their refusal to negotiate with them or take their empty assurances. They are aware from experience that this is a real decision that needs to be signed by the Vice-Chancellor. They called for the presence of VC Sudhir Krishnaswamy to come down and meet them face to face with a definite proposal.

Worse yet, students marked another recent administrative cutback. The university was said to have restricted free access to mental health services offered via the Amaha platform. The university was reported to have scaled back mental health services offered through Amaha. This was an important decision that was not taken with the students’ involvement.

Standoff Continues

NLSIU’s Student Bar Association has wholeheartedly backed the protesters. They issued a public statement that strongly condemned the inhuman condition on the campus of the university. Students want change, and they want it now and they want it to be seen.

The association was clear that they will not be easily deterred. They desire to have direct contact with senior officials of the university right away. Empty promises from the administration won’t work this time around.

With the stand-off turning into its current phase, the University administration has remained silent. Officials have not officially said anything about the campus crisis. Repeated attempts by the media to get a comment from the management have totally failed.
