Imran Khan
For a long time the social media has been abuzz about news of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023. There was even some speculation that he is dead.
Now news has come that his sister Uzma Khan met him in Adiala jail in Islamabad, after having been allowed to meet him by the Islamabad High Court, and said that he is alive.
I had given an interview recently to Munir Memon, a Pakistani journalist based in Karachi.

A 6 minute clip in that interview explaining why Imran Khan will not be released from jail is given below :
But now I would like to deal with another aspect.
Suppose Imran Khan is released and fresh parliamentary elections are held in Pakistan ( the previous elections were undoubtedly rigged ). If the elections are free and fair, Imran Khan’s party, the PTI, will undoubtedly sweep the elections, as an overwhelming number of Pakistanis support Imran Khan, and he will then again become the Prime Minister.
But the question is : is this relevant ?
The test of every political activity and political system is one, and only one : does it raise the standard of living of the people ? Does it give them better lives ?
From that viewpoint it is obvious that Imran Khan’s release and becoming Prime Minister again is wholly irrelevant, as even if he becomes the Prime Minister again the lives of the Pakistani people will remain the same, with massive poverty, massive unemployment, massive lack of healthcare ( one Shaukat Khanum hospital is surely not enough to cater to the needs of the entire population of Pakistan ), massive lack of good education, skyrocketing prices of food, electricity, and other essential commodities, etc.
Imran Khan has no solution to these massive socio-economic evils in Pakistan, as he has nothing in his head. All he can do is what he did when he was the Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022 ( and what Gen Zia ul Haq did earlier )–appeal in the name of Islam. He will talk endlessly of Madine ki Riyasat, he will repeatedly say that Prophet Mohammed was the best person who lived, or would ever live, on earth. He will hobnob with religious extremists, and organise meetings of the OIC ( Organization of Islamic Cooperation ), etc.
These may be excellent diversionary measures, but there is a saying ‘you can fool all the people for some time, and some people for all the time, but not all the people for all the time’. Ultimately the bread and butter issues will come back. You can’t solve the unemployment problem, the lack of healthcare problem, and the steep price rise, by talking of Islam endlessly.
The Roman Emperors used to say ” If you cannot give the people bread, give them circuses ”.
Imran Khan, assuming he becomes Prime Minister again, will say ” Since I cannot give the people jobs, food at affordable prices, and proper healthcare, and good education, I will give them Islam ”.
Queen Marie Antoinette of France said ” If the people don’t have bread, let them eat cake ”
Imran Khan will say ” If the people don’t have bread, let them eat Islam ”.
Unfortunately 90% of the people of Pakistan ( like 90% of the people of India ) are stupid and gullible, and don’t think deeply and consider all this. Imran Khan, even if he is released and becomes the Prime Minister again, will only act like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, leading rats and children to disaster.
