Justice Surya Kant Recommended as 53rd Chief Justice of India by Outgoing CJI Gavai

Outgoing Chief Justice of India Gavai Recommended Justice Surya Kant on the post of 53 rd Chief Justice of India.

The retiring Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai, has recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor in a significant development that has taken place in the Indian judiciary.

This nomination is in line with the traditional tradition of nominating the senior judge in the Supreme Court to the top office in the country. Justice Kant is very soon to be the 53 pth Chief Justice of India and he will take over the role upon the expiry of Justice Gavai. The office of the CJI has sent the official recommendation to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on the procedures to follow in the appointment process.

The procedure of appointment of Chief Justice in India is very well established and is founded on seniority principle. The current CJI starts the process when he or she designates the next senior-most judge as his successor. The Law Minister reviews this recommendation, and forwards the same to the Prime Minister. He started his career as a lawyer almost right after the completion of his university education and was starting a career that would last him decades.

In 1984, Justice Kant entered the legal field and became an advocate and started working in the District Court in Hisar. This was a great step as he was now in one of the most active and competitive High Courts in the country where he started to establish his great reputation as a lawyer.

Justice Kant become one of the best attorneys in the High Court during the next twenty years.
