India is permanently in an election mode. With 28 states and 8 union territories, elections are either going on, or their planning and preparations going on, all the year around ( presently the entire focus is on the Bihar state assembly elections, scheduled for November ).This means that the minds of our political leaders, of all parties, is focused on just one objective : getting votes, and winning elections. They have no time for the economic development of the country, creating jobs, or raising the standard of living of the people.
Everyone knows that Indian politics largely runs on the basis of caste and religion. Indian political leaders, of all parties, do their planning with an eye on caste and communal vote banks, and for securing these they polarise society and incite and spread caste and communal hatred, to get votes.Casteism and communalism are feudal forces, which have to be destroyed if India is to progress, but democracy, as it is practised in India, further fortifies, entrenches, and strengthens them ( as it runs on their basis ). How then can India progress ?When majoritarian rulers have a single point agenda of electoral control by arousing communal hatred, who will develop the economy for the young generations to get jobs, and raise the standard of living of our people ?
We may contrast this with China. In China there is no democracy ( unless we call having a single political party, and a single candidate in elections, a democracy ). But in China the political leaders are focused on a single agenda : rapidly developing the economy. The result has been that China, with its 19.23 trillion dollars GDP in 2025 has become the second most developed country in the world, next only to USA, whose GDP is about 30 trillion dollars, and the gap is rapidly closing ( Indian GDP is about 3.78 trillion dollars ). China has surpassed Europe, and has lifted about 800 million people out of poverty.

On the other hand, India still has massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnutrition ( every second child in India is malnourished, according to Global Hunger Index ), almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc.Democracy is not a holy cow, to be revered in all circumstances. It can only be a means to an end, not the end in itself. The end must be raising the standard of living of the people, and giving them better lives. If democracy helps in attaining that end, it is a good thing, but not otherwise. In India can democracy be regarded a good thing ? The entire focus of our political leaders is only on winning the next elections, not on economic development and raising the standard of our people. And for this they polarise society and incite caste and communal hatred, to get votes. How then can it be regarded a good thing ?
