What is to be done By Justice Katju

Independence Day for India is coming shortly on 15th August, but I will not be celebrating it as there is nothing to celebrate. Real independence is freedom from poverty, unemployment, hunger, lack of proper healthcare and good education, etc for the Indian masses, which we have not achieved despite 78 years since 1947.

I have said in several articles that our national aim must be to transform India ( in which term I include Pakistan and Bangladesh, for we are really one country only artificially and temporarily separated by a British swindle in 1947 but are sure to reunite one day under a secular government ) from a backward country  into a modern industrial giant, like China or USA ( for which we have all the potential, with our huge pool of bright engineers, scientists and technicians and immense natural resources ). Unless we do that we will never be able to abolish the curse of massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnutrition ( every second child in India is malnourished, according to Global Hunger Index, and the situation has worsened in recent years ), skyrocketing prices of food and other essential commodities, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc which have plagued us for centuries.

I have also said that this transformation will not be easy. It will require a mighty united protracted ( i.e. stretching over 10-15 years ) people’s struggle, led by modern minded leaders, in which tremendous sacrifices will have to be made, culminating in a historical people’s revolution, after which a new political and social order will be set up under which India rapidly industrialises, and the standard of living of our people steadily rises, and they get decent lives.

I have also said that historical experience shows that before an actual revolution there is always a period of ideological revolution, and India is presently passing through the period of ideological revolution

Many patriotic Indians have asked me how they can help in this connection, and what practical steps should be taken by them.

My reply is that since India is going through the period of ideological revolution, they can contribute a lot. For doing so I suggest they form study circles along with other like minded patriotic people in all localities, educational institutions, etc to discuss what can be done in this connection to achieve our national aim aforementioned, and for this they must use their creativity

The persons who should be allowed to join these study circles must only be those who strictly and unwaveringly subscribe to the following 3 principles :

(1) Our national aim must be as aforementioned i.e. to abolish poverty, unemployment, hunger, lack of proper healthcare and good education etc for the masses in India

(2) This aim cannot be achieved within the present constitutional framework and parliamentary democracy, but can only be achieved outside it, that is, by a mighty united protracted people’s struggle led by modern minded leaders culminating in a historical people’s revolution under which India rapidly industrialises and the standard of living of the people steadily rises.

(3) Casteism and communalism are feudal forces which must be destroyed. 

Persons who are casteist and communal must not be admitted to membership of these study circles. Of course this will exclude the vast majority of people who are casteist and communal, but so be it. We need quality, not quantity

The patriotic members of these study circles must discuss and think out ways and means, using their creativity, of how to change the mindsets of most Indians, which are still largely casteist and communal.

They must also think and discuss ways of disseminating the 3 principles abovementioned widely among the people. They will face strong and fierce opposition, at least initially, but that should not dishearten them.
