Subjects for the study circles –(1) Caste By Justice Katju

In my article ‘What is to be done’  I have said that our national aim must be to transform India ( in which term I include Pakistan and Bangladesh, for we are really one nation, and shall surely reunite one day under a secular government ) ) into a modern industrial giant, like China or USA, for unless we do that we will never be able to abolish our massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnutrition ( every second child in India is malnourished, according to Global Hunger Index ), almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc–socio-economic evils which have plagued us for centuries.

I have explained therein that this transformation is not possible within the framework of the Indian Constitution, but requires a revolution led by modern minded leaders.

I have also said therein that before every historical revolution there is an ideological revolution, e.g. before the great French Revolution of 1789 there was a long period of an ideological revolution in France led by great thinkers and writers like Voltaire, Rousseau and the French Encyclopedists.

India is presently passing through the period of its ideological revolution, and I have suggested that patriotic Indians, who wish to contribute to the abovementioned historical transformation of India, form study circles in all localities, educational institutions, etc to discuss various topics and disseminate modern ideas among the people.

In this connection I shall be writing a series of articles on various topics ( which will be posted on my fb page, twitter, etc ), and these may be discussed in the study circles.

Today I will discuss the topic of caste, which is a great social evil in India, and is blocking our progress, as it is dividing us at a time when we must be united

Many of our political parties rely on caste vote banks to win elections, and for this they polarise society and spread caste based hatred

I have explained caste in India in my articles below, which should be carefully read and discussed by members of the study circles

Caste is so widespread in India that it is rampant even among our Muslims, Sikhs and Christians, though theoretically their religions are totally against caste
