Today, Sunday, 3rd August 2025 is Friendship Day in India
In my opinion this day is of particular significance for India, and should be treated as Unity Day, when all genuinely patriotic Indians who want to see India rise as a prosperous country take a solemn pledge to fight for maintaining unity and friendship among all our religious, lingual and ethnic groups and communities, and expose and foil the wicked and nefarious designs of certain vested interests who try to create disunity and hatred among us.

We must realise that unless we unite and launch a powerful united people’s struggle for creating a political and social order, under modern minded leaders, for transforming our nation into a modern industrial giant with our people enjoying a high standard of living and getting decent lives, we will never be able to abolish the socio-economic curses which have plagued us for centuries viz massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnourishment, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for our masses, etc
It is our lingering disunity that obstructs us from becoming a modern industrial giant akin to China. We are fragmented based on religion, caste, ethnicity, and more. Without unity, we cannot accelerate industrialization, eradicate poverty, reduce unemployment, combat malnutrition, and address the many challenges we face.
In the Shantiparva of the Mahabharata, Bheeshma Pitamah says to Yudhishthir (Ch 107/108, shlok 14): “Republics have been destroyed only because of internal divisions among its people. Hence, a Republic should always strive to achieve unity and good relations among its people.”
The same thing was said by Chanakya in his Arthashastra
Some people argue that India’s tremendous diversity makes unity impossible. Now diversity can be a bad thing, but it can also be a good thing. America too, like India, was composed of different kinds of immigrants from different countries, but this diversity enabled it to rapidly progress and become the foremost country in the world and a a global powerhouse. This was because it accumulated the wisdom of different people coming from different countries, which when pooled together led to a technological boom.
So we have to convert the diversity of India from a bad thing to a good thing, just as the Americans ( who are broadly a country of immigrants like us ) did. Only by doing so and uniting can we make the great historical transformation which will lift up India into the ranks of the highly developed and prosperous countries.
Therefore, our diversity should not be a source of concern; unity is possible amid diversity.
However, of late incidents have happened, encouraged by the ruling dispensation in India, which have tended to disrupt our unity and polarise society on religious lines and create hatred among us. Atrocities on the Muslim minority in India have increased manifold e.g. lynching Muslims, bulldozing their houses, beating them up brutally for not saying Jai Shri Ram, arresting and jailing them on flimsy or fabricated charges e.g. Prof Mahmudabad of Ashoka University, Umar Khalid ( who has been in jail for 6 years without a trial ), etc

Recently in Varanasi a mob of Hindu Kanwarias harrassed, intimidated and assaulted a 16 year old Muslim girl, but instead of taking action against the assailants, the police lodged an FIR against the girl’s family members and other Muslims

It is time that the Indian nation unite and smash the wicked designs of those who strive to create strife and discord amonst us, and tear down the mask from the faces of such people ( who disguise themselves as ‘nationalists’ ), and expose them as the real enemies of India
