The Supreme Court has provided interim relief against orders made by Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh that made restaurants along the Kanwar Yatra route mandatorily put up the owner’s and employee’s names. The order which was contested by Mahua Moitra and civil society groups, had been faulted for allowing religious profiling and having no legal basis. The Court held that such administrative measures have to be rooted in statutes and cannot be used to force disclosure of identity in the name of public order.
