The role is part of the company’s General Counsel’s Office and will provide legal support to business teams across the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (AEM) region.

Senior Legal Counsel Role at Thomson Reuters
The Senior Legal Counsel will provide both strategic and practical legal advice to Thomson Reuters’ business teams.
The role will have a primary focus on the Middle East and Africa, while also requiring flexibility to support other parts of the AEM region when necessary.
The lawyer will be expected to understand business objectives and provide practical solutions while identifying and managing legal and regulatory risks.
The position will involve regular collaboration with legal, compliance, privacy, product and business teams located across Thomson Reuters.
Commercial Contracting Responsibilities
A major part of the role will involve drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements.
The selected candidate will work on a broad range of contracts, including SaaS and software licence agreements, data and content licensing agreements, professional services agreements, NDAs and partnership agreements.
Partnership arrangements may include reseller and channel agreements, alliances and technology integrations. The role will also involve working on AI-related commercial arrangements.
The Senior Legal Counsel will support strategic and high-value customer opportunities, including transactions involving the public sector and regulated industries.
The lawyer will advise on issues such as intellectual property rights, licensing structures, indemnities, allocation of liability and other commercial risks.
The role will also involve advising stakeholders on procurement requirements, localisation obligations and contracting practices, particularly in Middle Eastern jurisdictions.
AI, Data and Technology Legal Work
Technology and artificial intelligence will form another important part of the position.
Thomson Reuters is seeking someone who is comfortable dealing with legal, contractual and regulatory questions relating to AI-enabled products and services.
The Senior Legal Counsel will review and negotiate contractual terms concerning AI functionality, data governance, data-use rights, intellectual property ownership, risk allocation and liability.
The lawyer will work with product, privacy and compliance teams to understand emerging legal and regulatory developments affecting AI technologies and help the business respond to these developments.
This aspect of the role makes experience with technology law, SaaS arrangements, software licensing and data-related contractual issues particularly relevant.
Regulatory, Compliance and Risk Management
The selected candidate will also assist Thomson Reuters in identifying, assessing and mitigating legal and regulatory risks associated with business initiatives.
Working alongside subject matter experts, the lawyer may provide advice on privacy and data protection, anti-corruption and compliance matters, governance obligations, and consumer and commercial law.
The position will also involve developing and delivering legal training and guidance materials for business stakeholders.
An awareness of changing legal and regulatory requirements across the AEM region will therefore be important.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
The role requires strong collaboration with teams across the organisation.
The Senior Legal Counsel will build relationships with stakeholders in Sales, Professional Services, Product, Finance, Revenue Operations, Compliance, the General Counsel’s Office and Leadership.
The successful candidate will also collaborate with lawyers and subject matter experts across Thomson Reuters globally.
In addition to legal work, the role will contribute to process improvement initiatives. This may include developing templates and playbooks and supporting legal operations initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and consistency.
Eligibility and Required Qualifications
Candidates applying for the position should have a law degree and admission to practice in a relevant jurisdiction.
Thomson Reuters is seeking candidates with approximately 5–10 years of post-qualification legal experience.
Significant experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements is required. Candidates should also have a strong understanding of technology, SaaS, software licensing and commercial contracting.
Experience working with multinational organisations across multiple jurisdictions will be an advantage for the role, given its regional scope.
Applicants should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate strong commercial judgement. The ability to provide practical and business-focused legal advice is an important requirement.
The position also calls for strong stakeholder-management and relationship-building skills, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced working environment.
Business fluency in English is required.
