The Vienna Centre for Advanced Studies (ViCAS), University of Vienna, has opened applications for its 2027–2028 Fellowship Programme. The fellowship invites international scholars from all academic disciplines, including Law, to undertake interdisciplinary research in Vienna.
This is an excellent opportunity for researchers working in areas such as international law, constitutional law, human rights, technology law, environmental law, AI governance, public law, legal theory, and comparative law.
🎓 Fellowship Categories
1. Mid-Career Fellowship
Applicants should:
- Hold a doctoral degree awarded at least 3 years before the application deadline.
- Have an excellent research record relative to their career stage.
- Have established an independent research profile.
2. Advanced Fellowship
Applicants should:
- Hold a doctoral degree awarded at least 8 years before the application deadline.
- Demonstrate an outstanding record of research excellence.
- Show evidence of academic leadership.
📅 Fellowship Duration
Applicants may choose one of the following residency options:
- Full Residency: 1 October 2027 – 30 June 2028 (9 months)
- Fall Residency: 1 October 2027 – 31 January 2028 (4 months)
- Spring Residency: 1 March 2028 – 30 June 2028 (4 months)
Fellows are expected to be present on campus throughout the fellowship and actively participate in ViCAS academic activities.

- Meet the fellowship-specific doctoral degree requirement.
- Have a strong record of academic research.
- Obtain formal support from a Professor at the University of Vienna.
- Submit all application documents in English.
