About ARIEL

The Austrian Review of International and European Law (ARIEL) is an annual peer-reviewed journal that serves as a scholarly forum for discussions on public international law and European law, with particular emphasis on issues of relevance to Austria. The journal publishes both theoretical and practical scholarship and includes analytical articles, shorter notes on current developments, and a digest of Austrian practice in international law.

Theme

The 31st volume of ARIEL focuses on “Peace and Security” in International Law. The editors invite contributions examining contemporary legal challenges arising from the functioning of the UN collective security system, unilateral state action, regional organizations, sanctions, self-defence, and related developments.

Some indicative themes include:

• Theoretical and conceptual discussions on peace and security in international law.
• The role and competence of regional organizations, such as the Council of Europe and the African Union.
• International legal instruments intersecting with peace and security, including unilateral and collective sanctions.
• The use and misuse of Article 51 of the UN Charter and security exceptions under international treaties.
• Comparative, interdisciplinary, and critical approaches to contemporary peace and security issues.

Eligibility

The call is open to all interested persons wishing to contribute original scholarly work in the field of public international law and European law.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions must comply with the following requirements:

• Analytical Articles: 8,000–12,500 words (including footnotes).
• Notes on Current Developments: 6,000–8,000 words (including footnotes).
• Citation Style: 5th Edition of OSCOLA.
• Review Process: Independent double-blind peer review.
• Exclusive Submission: Authors must confirm that the manuscript is submitted exclusively to ARIEL.
• Contributions should also comply with the journal’s General Information for Authors.
