I was deeply distressed on hearing of the brutal murder of Angel Chakma, a young man hailing from the north eastern Indian state of Tripura, who was studying in Dehra Dun along with his younger brother Michael.
It is reported that the assailants called him a ‘Chinese’ and ‘Momo’ ( in view of his Mongoloid facial features, which many people in north Indian states have ), on 9th December 2025. When he objected to these racial slurs, saying he was an Indian not a Chinese, they attacked him with knives and rods, resulting in his death in hospital on 24th December

There is tremendous diversity in India, which has several religions, castes, languages, races, cultures, etc. So the only correct policy and attitude which can keep India united, and take us on the path of progress is that of ‘suleh-e-kul’ or giving equal respect to all religions, races, lingual and cultural groups, etc, proclaimed by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar

Though people whose ancestors invaded/migrated into India from the north west mostly have Caucasian features, whereas those whose ancestors came from the north east ( Nagas, Mizos, etc ) mostly have Mongoloid features.
But the latter are as much Indian as the former. Unfortunately they are often insulted by the former by calling them ‘chinkies’ or ‘momos’, or even physically attacking them, which is not only highly improper and totally unacceptable, it is also a crime under section 153A IPC which states :

by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise, promotes or attempts to promote, on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever, disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious, racials, language or regional groups or castes or communities, or
commits any act which is prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different religious, racial, language or regional groups or castes or communities, and which disturbs or is likely to disturb the public tranquility, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both ”.
