Oxford University Press has invited abstracts for the Social Media and Language section of the Social Media in Society and Culture Oxford Intersections resource. The call seeks interdisciplinary research examining how language and other forms of communication are used in digital spaces and how social media, artificial intelligence and algorithms are influencing online discourse.
The opportunity is open to researchers from different academic disciplines, institutions, geographical regions and career stages, including academics, professionals, practitioners and PhD students.
Oxford Intersections Call for Papers
Oxford University Press launched Oxford Intersections in 2025 as a new type of scholarly resource focused on peer reviewed interdisciplinary research addressing complex environmental, cultural, political and social challenges.
The Social Media and Language section will bring together research examining how online users employ language and other semiotic resources in creative and strategic ways. Areas of interest include everyday communication, entertainment, activism, influence and conflict in digital environments.
Research may also examine the changing role of digital environments, artificial intelligence and algorithms in shaping online discourse and the ways individuals and communities negotiate identities and ideologies through digital communication.
Research Themes
The call welcomes research based on varied methodological and theoretical approaches. Contributions may explore the relationship between social media and language from linguistic, cultural, technological, social or other interdisciplinary perspectives.
The themes can also be relevant to legal researchers examining areas such as technology law, digital rights, online speech, platform regulation, artificial intelligence governance, privacy, intermediary liability and digital constitutionalism, where the research has a suitable interdisciplinary focus.
Who Can Submit
Oxford Intersections welcomes contributors from diverse backgrounds and career stages. Eligible contributors may include researchers, academics, professionals, practitioners and PhD students.
Authors must hold a research degree at master’s level or higher.
The call therefore provides an opportunity for qualified legal researchers and doctoral scholars whose research intersects with social media, technology, language, digital society or related areas to submit their work for consideration.
Submission Requirements
Authors are required to submit an abstract of no more than 500 words, along with their CV.
The proposed manuscripts must be original and should not have been previously published or be under consideration elsewhere. If an abstract is accepted, the final article should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words.
Articles will undergo a rigorous peer review process before publication.
Abstracts and CVs should be submitted to Hanwool Choe at hanwoolc@hku.hk.
