Fortnite’s iOS Ban: Unraveling the Epic Games vs. Apple Legal Battle in Simple Terms

During the year 2020, Epic Games implemented a direct payment option in Fortnite, which allowed them to circumvent Apple’s thirty percent App Store commission. This was the beginning of the legal war between Epic Games and Apple. As a consequence of this, Fortnite was removed from the App Store, and Epic filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the latter of engaging in monopolistic acts. Despite the fact that Apple must permit developers to advise customers of alternative payment methods, a court determined in 2021 that the company did not establish a monopoly. Despite this, Fortnite is still not available for iOS devices because of continuous disagreements around app submissions and whether or not they comply with Apple’s requirements. The situation highlights the difficulties of digital marketplaces and the delicate balance that must be maintained between platform governance and the freedoms of developers.
