Supreme Court: Scolding Not Abetment to Suicide, Discharges School Official Under Section 306 IPC

In the case of Thangavel Vs. The State, Through Inspector Of Police & Anr., A school official, Thangavel, was prosecuted for abetment of suicide when a student committed suicide after being scolded for misbehavior upon a complaint by a peer. The Supreme Court considered if the scolding amounted to criminal abetment under Section 306 IPC (now Section 108 BNS). The Court held that Thangavel’s act was a reasonable exercise of disciplinary authority with no personal hostility or intent to induce suicide.
